A Portrait of Queer (Married) Life in America

As Washington State puts the issue of gay marriage on the fast track I can’t help but get an excited flutter that my home-sweet-home-state is about to make a lot of people very happy.  I’ve never been one to say that marriage is right or necessary for everyone, but I do happen to think that it’s particularly medieval to not have the choice!

I want to hear from some of you married queer folks out there.  I want to know; are you queering what it looks like and feels like to be married and possibly the hertronormative expectations that go along with it?   I want to hear from those of you who are planning a wedding – how is (or isn’t) your wedding queer??

I won’t often cross promote on this blog but I feel like today it feels right, as we inch closer and closer to passing this bill, and my two worlds threaten overlap.  For the last year I have been photographing weddings.  It happened on accident when my (straight) little sister had the queerest wedding I’ve even been to.  My heart burst open and I saw the tradition and event with new eyes.  I’ve been hooked ever since, and just made this website as a way to promote the work.   BUT…I really would love to photograph MORE QUEER WEDDINGS (duh!).  Come on Washington (or anywhere really!) say I Do.  www.mollylandrethweddings.com

GO WASHINGTON GO

I just had to post this video because it makes me so happy that Governor Gregoir is finally putting her weight behind legalizing gay marriage in Washington State.  YAY!  It’s about time!!

NEW FEATURE!

Don’t miss the new feature up today on EMBODIMENTUSA.COM!

Check out the lovely Ms. Ginger and read what she has to say about our photo shoot back in 2007. “To me, Embodiment is about recognition, being called out by name–and I think this is part of why I wanted to participate. As a queer femme, I’m often invisible, even in queer communities….”

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I am so grateful for such an outstanding 2011 and know 2012 will be even better.  So many awesome things have happened in the last few months that I’ve been to busy to blog regularly…SO…here’s a little “End of 2011 Review.”

1.  I was honored to be a part of a show here in Seattle at the Platform Gallery.  To promote the shot I did a quick interview with Jen Graves at The Stranger about it while cooking Thanksgiving Dinner.  Check it out!
2.  I have a big exhibition up until the end of January at the East Shore Unitarian Church in Bellevue hosted by the camera club f5.6 and sponsored by 4Culture.  If you’re a local go check it out!  You don’t have to be a part of the church to enjoy it.  For more information go HERE

3.  I had so much fun visiting and lecturing with my old friend Eli  (who you may recognize) who curated this exhibition of queer artists at the Williams Way LGBTQ community center in Philadelphia.  Read a bit about it HERE

4.  After Philly I flew straight off to NY to give a talk as part of an exhibition at the Camera Club of New York.  The enthusiastic crowd of family, friends and supporters quickly eased my nerves and the night went off without a hitch!  The exhibition was wonderful as well and I was so happy to see all the great work in person!  Curated by Tema Stauffer from Culturehall – Read more HERE

5.  As mentioned in another blog post, I was able to attend and take part in the Photography + Publishing conference hosted by Lightwork Gallery + Syracuse University.  I pushed by nerves aside and took part in a panel with Andy Adams, Amy Stein and Phil Toledano about Web 2.0 Publishing.  It was so much fun!  You can see the live stream video below!

THANK YOU to everyone who made this year so fun and rewarding.  Here’s to a productive and inspiring 2012!!

Photographers + Publishing + Web 2.0

Just recovering from a red-eye flight into Syracuse this morning in the very lovely Skyler Hotel.   I’m here at the SPE Northeast / Mid-Atlantic Region conference hosted by Light Work & Syracuse University to present on a panel about Web/Photo 2.0 with Andy Adams of FlakPhoto.com, Amy Stein and Phil Toledano.  Since this panel is all about photographs and how they use the internet…I thought it would be a pretty good reason to update the ol’ blog!  Ok – now back to tweeking my slideshow!  ;-)  Check out the fun link up HERE!

Video Interview from C4FAP

I sat down with Hamidah Glasgow for an interview about the exhibition
of Embodiment at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado:

As I was watching the video above – this little gem popped up next to it.  Total shout-out from the Pride Network Vlog for Women’s History month.  What??  How cool is this?!  Thanks A.J. Duncan!

Solo Exhibition at The Center for Fine Art Photography

Embodiment is on view at The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado through Oct. 29th!  I had a chance to attend the opening a few weeks ago and was blown away by the hospitality and enthusiasm I felt while in town.  Amazing city, beautiful gallery, if you’re passing through be sure to stop by and say hello!

Special thanks to Hamidah Glasgow (Executive Director of C4FAP) and Co. for being such a fun and talented group of folks to work with.   xox Molly
